Description

A lithograph by Eugène Delacroix from his 1828 series illustrating Goethe's Faust, capturing the tense encounter between Faust, Marguerite, and Mephistopheles.

This lithograph is part of a series produced by Eugène Delacroix for the French translation of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's Faust. Published in 1828, the work demonstrates the artist's fascination with the dramatic potential of literature. The scene depicts the moment Faust, accompanied by Mephistopheles, approaches Marguerite on a street in a medieval town.

Delacroix employs a fluid, expressive line to capture the tension between the characters. Faust stands to the left, his posture suggesting a calculated attempt at gallantry. Marguerite occupies the centre, her body turned away in a gesture of hesitation or modesty. Mephistopheles stands to the right, his sharp features and dark attire providing a visual counterpoint to the central pair. The background features architectural elements rendered with loose, atmospheric strokes, which suggest the narrow streets of a German town without distracting from the figures.

The composition relies on the interplay of light and shadow, a hallmark of Delacroix's graphic work. The artist uses the lithographic medium to create varied tonal ranges, from the deep blacks of the costumes to the lighter, textured surfaces of the stone pavement. The text at the bottom of the print, taken directly from Goethe's play, provides the narrative context for the encounter. This print is an example of the Romantic interest in the darker, psychological aspects of human interaction and the supernatural. Delacroix's ability to imbue a static scene with narrative urgency is evident here, as he focuses on the psychological weight of the interaction rather than mere physical description. The work remains a significant example of nineteenth-century book illustration, reflecting the period's preoccupation with the intersection of visual art and classic literature.
