This engraving, titled Hongerigen spijzigen, depicts the biblical act of feeding the hungry, one of the Seven Works of Mercy. Dirck Volckertsz. Coornhert, a Dutch engraver and humanist, demonstrates his technical proficiency through the use of precise, rhythmic hatching to define form and shadow. The composition is structured within a classical architectural setting, featuring a large archway that frames the central figures.

In the foreground, a central figure distributes bread to those in need, including a kneeling man and a woman with a child. The figures are rendered with a focus on anatomical detail, reflecting the influence of Italian Mannerism on Northern European printmakers of the sixteenth century. The background reveals a secondary scene of charitable activity, providing depth to the narrative. The inscription at the base, 'Ic beh honger gehadt, ghi hebt mi ghesspyst', translates to 'I have been hungry, and you have fed me', referencing Matthew 25:35.

Coornhert was a significant figure in the Dutch intellectual sphere, and his prints often carried moral or didactic weight. This work is part of a series illustrating the Works of Mercy, a common theme in Christian art intended to encourage virtuous behaviour.
