Théo van Rysselberghe, a central figure in the Belgian Neo-Impressionist movement, painted this work in 1905. The scene captures a Mediterranean coastal setting near Cavaliere, where the artist spent time during his travels. The composition employs the technique of pointillism, where small, distinct dots of colour are applied in patterns to form an image. When viewed from a distance, these individual points blend in the eye of the observer to create a luminous effect.

The painting depicts figures resting and bathing among pine trees that frame the view of the sea.
