Festival Dance of the Virginians - Theodor de Bry

This engraving, titled Festival Dance of the Virginians, is a plate from the 1590 publication 'A briefe and true report of the new found land of Virginia'. Theodor de Bry produced this work based on the original watercolour drawings of John White, who accompanied the 1585 expedition to Roanoke Island. The image depicts a ritual dance performed by the Secotan people, a group of the Carolina Algonquian.

The composition is circular, featuring figures arranged around a central group of three dancers. The participants hold rattles and branches, moving rhythmically around carved wooden posts. These posts, topped with human faces, represent ancestral figures or deities. De Bry utilised the copperplate engraving technique to translate White's observational drawings into a medium suitable for mass reproduction in Europe. The lines are precise and controlled, characteristic of late sixteenth-century printmaking.

While the work provides a visual record of indigenous customs as observed by European explorers, it also reflects the aesthetic conventions of the period. The figures are rendered with a degree of classical proportion that was common in European art of the time, rather than strictly adhering to the physical appearance of the subjects. The engraving serves as a primary document for historians studying the early contact period between European settlers and the indigenous populations of North America.
