Description

A woodblock print by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi depicting a samurai observing a steamship, capturing the intersection of tradition and modernisation in Meiji-era Japan.

This woodblock print by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi forms part of the series 'Fifty-three Stations of Suehiro', a collaborative project that reimagined the traditional Tokaido road journey. Yoshitoshi, a student of Kuniyoshi, captures a moment of transition in Meiji-era Japan. The composition juxtaposes a traditional samurai figure on horseback, positioned in the foreground, with the encroaching presence of modern industrial technology in the form of a steamship.

The print displays the characteristic aesthetic of late Edo and early Meiji period ukiyo-e. The artist employs a clear, graphic style to delineate the craggy mountain peaks and the rhythmic movement of the water. The colour palette relies on muted blues, greens, and earthy tones, which provide a sense of historical grounding. The steamship, billowing smoke, acts as a visual disruption to the classical coastal scene, reflecting the rapid modernisation occurring across the nation at the time.

Yoshitoshi is often recognised for his later, more psychological works, yet this early series demonstrates his technical proficiency with the woodblock medium. The lines are precise, and the arrangement of elements maintains a balance between the narrative focus on the warrior and the expansive coastal environment. The inclusion of the fan-shaped cartouche in the upper corner is a standard convention of the series, identifying the specific station along the route. This print offers a view into the shifting cultural identity of Japan during the nineteenth century, where the remnants of the feudal past encountered the mechanical innovations of the West. The work remains a clear example of how artists of the period documented the changing physical and social environment of their country through the medium of the printed image.
