Description

A 1852 woodblock print by Utagawa Kunisada featuring a dual-register composition of a Kanagawa steamship and a dramatic Kabuki theatre scene.

This woodblock print by Utagawa Kunisada belongs to the series 'Fifty-Three Stations of the Tōkaidō: Inspired by Famous Pictures', published in 1852. The composition follows the standard format for this series, which divides the image into two distinct registers. The upper section depicts a landscape scene, specifically the port of Kanagawa, featuring a steamship. This inclusion reflects the mid-nineteenth-century Japanese fascination with foreign technology and the changing maritime activity along the coast.

The lower register presents a dramatic scene from the Kabuki theatre. Kunisada, a master of the actor print genre, captures a moment of high tension between two figures. The male actor, rendered with the exaggerated facial features and red kumadori makeup typical of a villainous or powerful role, looms over a female character. His expression is one of intense focus, while his costume displays bold patterns and textures. The female figure is positioned below, her posture suggesting vulnerability or surprise. The contrast between the static, observational nature of the upper landscape and the dynamic, performative energy of the lower portrait is a hallmark of this series.

Kunisada utilised a palette of saturated blues, greens, and reds, which remain clear despite the age of the original print. The lines are precise, defining the contours of the actors' garments and the architectural details of the ship. This work provides a window into the cultural synthesis of the late Edo period, where traditional theatrical arts existed alongside the encroaching influence of Western industrialisation. The print serves as a record of both the geography of the Tōkaidō road and the popular entertainment of the era, combining two distinct subjects into a single, cohesive visual narrative.
