Shun'ei, a student of Katsukawa Shunshō, was well known for his expressive portrayals of actors and theatrical narratives. The composition employs a split-level perspective, common in Japanese prints of the period, to convey both the interior drama of the foreground figures and the chaotic activity occurring in the background courtyard.

In the foreground, a central male figure stands in a formal pose, draped in a patterned kimono, while attendants and women observe him. The artist uses clear, controlled lines to define the facial features and the folds of the garments, characteristic of the Katsukawa school's focus on realistic actor likenesses.
