Charles-Émile Jacque was a central figure in the Barbizon School, known for his technical mastery of etching and his focus on rural life. This work, titled Première leçon d'équitation, captures a quiet moment of childhood play within a farmyard setting. A young child sits atop a sheep, guided by an older boy, while a girl stands to the side holding a bundle of fodder. A smaller lamb remains nearby, grounding the scene in the everyday reality of agricultural life.

Jacque utilised the etching medium to create varied textures, from the coarse wool of the sheep to the soft foliage of the background trees.
