Description
Fleet Valley looks along still blue water beneath a pale limestone escarpment, where layered green hills, tree-lined banks and a narrow path lead into Dumfries and Galloway.
The water narrows through a succession of rounded hills, reflecting the pale blue of a high summer sky. At the right, a steep light-coloured rock face catches the sun above thick woodland. Small wooded points project into the channel, while a rough path crosses the grassy slope in the foreground and leads the eye towards the distant folds of farmland.
The composition gives Fleet Valley a long, unhurried sense of depth. It moves from the close texture of grass and shrubs to open water, then on to hills patterned with fields and tree belts. Cool blue and mossy green are set against the chalky cliff, making the bright central water the quiet anchor of the scene.
