Description
A detailed hanging scroll depicting a basin of goldfish beneath a cascading arrangement of peonies and chrysanthemums, painted by Sō Shizan.
This hanging scroll by Sō Shizan displays the characteristic precision of the Kacho-ga tradition, which focuses on the observation of birds and flowers. The composition centres on a large, octagonal ceramic basin placed upon a decorative stand. Within the basin, several goldfish swim, rendered with subtle shading that suggests movement beneath the water surface.
Above the basin, a dense arrangement of flora dominates the upper portion of the silk. The artist depicts a variety of blossoms, including peonies and chrysanthemums, which cascade downwards in a deliberate, balanced manner. A hanging basket, suspended by blue cords and tassels, acts as a secondary structural element, weaving through the floral display. The background remains a neutral, muted tone, allowing the specific colours of the petals and the fish to emerge clearly.
Sō Shizan, a painter active during the mid-to-late Edo period, demonstrates a high level of technical control in this work. The brushwork is fine and controlled, reflecting the influence of Chinese painting styles that were popular among Japanese literati at the time. The inclusion of the goldfish basin adds a domestic, contemplative quality to the scene, contrasting the wilder, organic growth of the flowers with the ordered, man-made environment of the vessel. The overall effect is one of quiet observation, typical of the period's interest in the natural world as a subject for refined artistic study. The silk support has aged to a warm, golden hue, which complements the palette of the painted elements.
