Description
A refined woodblock print by Kamisaka Sekka depicting the traditional Japanese craft of fulling silk, characterised by minimalist composition and soft colouration.
This woodblock print originates from the collection titled Momoyogusa, or Flowers of a Hundred Worlds, published between 1909 and 1910. Kamisaka Sekka, a master of the modern Rinpa school, created these volumes to reintroduce traditional Japanese aesthetic principles to a contemporary audience. The series is celebrated for its synthesis of classical themes with a simplified, modern graphic sensibility.
The image depicts the traditional process of fulling silk, known as uchiginu. Two figures are shown in a quiet, focused activity, using wooden mallets to soften and smooth the fabric. The composition is notable for its use of negative space, a hallmark of Sekka's approach. By placing the figures to the lower right against a vast, pale yellow background, the artist directs the viewer's attention to the rhythmic motion of the task. The figures are rendered with minimal, fluid lines, and their garments are decorated with subtle patterns that echo the historical textile designs of the Edo period.
Sekka's work bridges the gap between the decorative arts and fine art printmaking. His ability to distil complex subjects into essential forms reflects his training in both traditional Japanese painting and his exposure to Western design movements during his travels to Europe. The colours are applied with a restrained palette, allowing the soft tones of the silk and the muted hues of the clothing to harmonise with the paper. This print offers a glimpse into a domestic craft that was once central to Japanese life, presented here with a sense of calm and precision. It is a representative example of how Sekka adapted the historical Rinpa style to suit the sensibilities of the early twentieth century, maintaining a balance between decorative appeal and narrative clarity.
