Shibata Zeshin, a master of both lacquerware and painting, created this fan-shaped composition with characteristic economy of line. The work features a sweeping, verdant mound of grass that anchors the lower portion of the frame. From this base, delicate botanical forms emerge, including fiddlehead ferns and small flowering plants. The artist employs a restrained palette, allowing the natural texture of the paper to provide a neutral background for the organic subjects.

Zeshin was active during the transition between the Edo and Meiji periods. His training in the Shijo school of painting is evident here, particularly in his observation of nature and the fluid application of pigment. The composition is designed for a folding fan, a format that requires a specific balance of negative space and subject matter.
