A delicate woodblock print depicting a quail in flight, accompanied by chrysanthemums and pampas grass, executed in the Japanese kacho-ga style.
This woodblock print by Matsuki Heikichi captures a quail in mid-flight, rendered with the precision characteristic of the kacho-ga tradition. The artist focuses on the bird's anatomy, using fine lines to delineate the texture of the feathers and the subtle patterns across its wings. The composition is sparse, allowing the subject to occupy the negative space of the paper, which is typical of Japanese printmaking aesthetics from the early twentieth century.
To the right, a cluster of pale blue chrysanthemums and delicate stalks of pampas grass provide a sense of seasonal context. The colour palette is restrained, relying on muted browns, greys, and soft blues to maintain a naturalistic appearance. The print demonstrates the technical skill of the carvers and printers associated with the Matsuki workshop, who maintained high standards for colour registration and paper quality during the Shin-hanga period.
Unlike earlier Ukiyo-e prints that often featured bold outlines and flat areas of colour, this work employs softer gradations and a more observational approach to nature. The quail is depicted in a dynamic posture, yet the overall mood remains quiet and contemplative. The inclusion of the artist's seal in the lower right corner confirms the provenance of the piece, linking it to the broader output of the Matsuki firm, which was active in Tokyo during the Meiji and Taisho eras. This print is a clear example of the period's interest in combining traditional subject matter with a refined, modern sensibility regarding composition and print technique.
