Otto H. Bacher, an American artist associated with the Etching Revival, produced this work during his time in Venice. The etching captures the Fondamenta della Zattere, a long quay along the Giudecca Canal. Bacher was part of a circle of artists, including Frank Duveneck and James Abbott McNeill Whistler, who spent time in Italy during the late nineteenth century. Their collective focus on the atmospheric qualities of Venetian architecture and maritime life defined much of their output from this period.

The composition organises the scene around the contrast between the solid, classical architecture on the left and the complex rigging of the moored ships on the right. Bacher employs a fine, precise line to delineate the stone structures and the intricate web of masts, ropes, and sails.
