This engraving by Heinrich Aldegrever, dated 1549, depicts the classical personification of Fortune. As a member of the group known as the Little Masters, Aldegrever produced small-scale prints that demonstrate technical precision and a mastery of the burin. The figure of Fortuna stands atop a sphere, a traditional attribute representing the instability and unpredictable nature of luck. She holds a large sail, which billows behind her to catch the wind, further suggesting the capricious movement associated with fate.

The composition reflects the influence of Italian Renaissance art on German printmakers of the sixteenth century. The figure is rendered with a focus on anatomical proportion and the fluid drapery of her garments, which contrast with the stark, hatched background. To the left, a small, dark figure appears to be caught within the curve of the sail, perhaps representing the human condition subject to the whims of fortune. Aldegrever was based in Soest and was heavily influenced by the work of Albrecht Dürer.
