A 1561 engraving by Hieronymus Cock, inspired by the surreal and moralising imagery of Hieronymus Bosch, depicting a complex allegorical scene of spiritual trial.
This engraving, published by Hieronymus Cock in 1561, draws heavily upon the visual vocabulary of Hieronymus Bosch. The composition presents a chaotic, dreamlike scene populated by hybrid creatures, strange mechanical vessels, and figures engaged in various acts of torment and contemplation. At the centre, a large, fish-like structure serves as a vessel, while the surrounding terrain is filled with grotesque figures and bizarre architectural forms that defy physical logic. The work reflects the fascination with moralising allegories prevalent in the sixteenth-century Low Countries.
To the right, a solitary figure sits in a makeshift shelter, observing the surrounding pandemonium with a sense of detachment. This figure provides a anchor for the viewer, contrasting the quietude of faith with the external chaos of the world. The Latin inscription at the base, 'Multae tribulationes iustorum de omnibus iis liberabit eos Dominus' (Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers them out of them all), clarifies the theological intent behind the imagery. Rather than a simple depiction of hell, the print functions as a meditation on the trials faced by the pious in a world filled with temptation and disorder.
Cock, a significant publisher and printmaker in Antwerp, was instrumental in disseminating the style of Bosch to a wider audience.
