Dalton, a British artist and librarian to King George III, produced this work after a composition by the Italian painter Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, known as Guercino. The inscription at the base, 'Guercino del. R.D. sculp.', confirms this relationship, identifying Guercino as the original draughtsman and Dalton as the printmaker. The composition focuses on the expressive faces and postures of the singers. The central figure, a bearded man, gestures with his hand as if keeping time, while his companions concentrate on the musical scores held before them.
