Description

A detailed study of a mouse from multiple perspectives, rendered in pen and grey wash by Dutch artist Jacques de Gheyn (II).

Jacques de Gheyn (II) was a prominent Dutch engraver, painter, and draughtsman during the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. This work, executed in pen and brown ink with grey wash, demonstrates his precise observational skills. The sheet features four distinct studies of a mouse, captured from various angles to provide a comprehensive view of the subject.

De Gheyn often turned his attention to the natural world, documenting flora and fauna with a scientific rigour that was common among artists of the Dutch Golden Age. The title suggests an interest in pathology, reflecting a period where natural history and medical curiosity frequently intersected. Each mouse is rendered with careful attention to the texture of the fur and the specific posture of the animal, using subtle washes to create volume and shadow on the page.

Unlike the formalised compositions of the time, these sketches possess a directness that suggests they were drawn from life. The artist uses fine, controlled lines to define the anatomy, while the grey wash provides a sense of weight and presence. The composition is sparse, allowing the viewer to focus entirely on the biological details of the rodents. This approach to drawing, which prioritises empirical observation, aligns with the broader intellectual shifts in Northern Europe during this era. The work remains a fine example of the intersection between artistic practice and the burgeoning interest in the natural sciences, showing how artists contributed to the documentation of the world around them.
