Description

A formal portrait engraving by Gérard Edelinck depicting the French military commander François-Henri de Montmorency, based on a painting by Hyacinthe Rigaud.

This engraving by Gérard Edelinck depicts François-Henri de Montmorency, the Duc de Piney-Luxembourg, a prominent French military commander during the reign of Louis XIV. Edelinck, a Flemish engraver who spent much of his career in Paris, was highly regarded for his technical precision and his ability to translate the painterly qualities of contemporary portraiture into the medium of copperplate engraving. This work is based on a painting by Hyacinthe Rigaud, the pre-eminent portraitist of the French court.

The composition follows the conventions of seventeenth-century aristocratic portraiture. The subject is presented within an oval frame, a common device that directs the viewer's attention to the sitter's face and posture. He wears the armour of a military leader, reflecting his role as a Maréchal de France, while his elaborate periwig signifies his high social status. The inclusion of a coat of arms at the base of the frame serves to identify the sitter and his lineage, a standard practice in formal portraiture of the period.

Edelinck's mastery of the burin is evident in the varied textures of the print. He uses fine, cross-hatched lines to suggest the reflective surface of the metal armour and the soft, voluminous curls of the wig. The shading is controlled and deliberate, creating a sense of volume and presence. The print captures the gravity and authority expected of a high-ranking military official in the late seventeenth century. This piece offers a clear example of the collaborative relationship between painters and engravers in the production of official portraiture, where the print served as a means to disseminate the image of the elite to a wider audience. The clarity of the lines and the balanced composition demonstrate the high standards of the French school of engraving during this era.
