This etching serves as the front cover for the portfolio 'Japonisme: Dix Eaux-Fortes', a collection of ten prints by the French artist Félix Hilaire Buhot. Produced in 1883, the work captures the fascination with Japanese aesthetics that permeated the Parisian art scene during the late nineteenth century. Buhot was a master of the etching medium, known for his experimental approach to plate tone and his ability to combine multiple vignettes within a single composition.

The image features a central scroll unrolling to reveal a collection of motifs associated with Japanese art. A heron stands amidst reeds, while a frog sits in the foreground.
