This etching serves as the frontispiece for a series of topographical prints by the French artist Israël Silvestre. Silvestre, a draughtsman and etcher, spent significant time in Italy during his youth, where he produced numerous studies of Roman architecture and the surrounding countryside. This specific plate demonstrates his technical proficiency in the medium of etching, a process he utilised to document the classical ruins and urban vistas of the seventeenth century.

The composition features a central cartouche, designed to contain the title of the collection, flanked by two putti. These figures, rendered with soft modelling, provide a decorative frame for the text. Above the cartouche, a cherub head with wings completes the upper section of the ornamental structure. The background offers a subtle, atmospheric suggestion of a Roman landscape, with distant hills and structures sketched in light, precise lines. This contrast between the heavy, sculptural quality of the central cartouche and the airy, expansive horizon is characteristic of Silvestre's approach to printmaking.

The text at the base, 'Diverses veuës de Rome et des environs', identifies the publisher as Israël Henriet, a prominent figure in the Parisian print trade and a relative of Silvestre. The inclusion of the phrase 'Avec privilege du Roy' indicates the official sanction required for the distribution of such works in France at the time. Silvestre's work remains a primary source for historians interested in the appearance of Rome before the extensive urban modifications of later centuries. His ability to balance architectural accuracy with decorative flair made his prints popular among collectors and travellers on the Grand Tour.
