Description
A detailed reproduction of a traditional Japanese hanging scroll depicting the wrathful deity Fudō Myōō surrounded by flames.
This hanging scroll depicts Fudō Myōō, the Immovable Wisdom King, a central figure in Japanese Esoteric Buddhism. As a wrathful manifestation of the Buddha Mahavairocana, Fudō Myōō serves to protect the dharma and guide practitioners through the destruction of ignorance. The iconography follows established traditions, showing the deity surrounded by a halo of flames, which represent the purification of the mind and the burning away of worldly attachments.
In his right hand, the deity holds a sword, used to cut through delusion, while his left hand grips a rope, intended to bind those who are led astray by their own desires. The figure stands upon a rock, symbolising his unshakeable resolve. He is flanked by two attendants, Kongara Dōji and Seitaka Dōji, who are frequently depicted in this specific triad. The dark, atmospheric background contrasts with the fiery aura, creating a sense of spiritual intensity and focus.
Such paintings were produced for ritual use within temples or private devotional spaces. The application of colour on silk allows for subtle gradations in the flames and the deity's skin, which is often rendered in a deep, dark tone. The composition adheres to strict iconographic rules, ensuring the correct representation of the deity's attributes and posture. This print captures the fine details of the original silk painting, from the delicate gold-leaf patterns on the garments to the expressive, stern facial features of the Wisdom King. It is a representation of the aesthetic and spiritual traditions of medieval Japanese religious art, where visual clarity and symbolic precision were paramount for the practitioner's meditation.
