A serene woodblock print by Hasui Kawase depicting a moonlit night in the village of Magome, featuring a prominent pine tree and a quiet rural dwelling.
Full Moon at Magome, created in 1930, is a representative work by Hasui Kawase, a central figure in the Shin-hanga movement. This print captures a quiet, nocturnal scene in the rural village of Magome. The composition is dominated by the silhouette of a large pine tree, which stretches across the frame against a deep blue sky. A pale yellow moon is partially obscured by the branches, providing a subtle light source that defines the edges of the foliage. Below the tree, the dark forms of traditional thatched-roof houses emerge from the shadows. A single, warm light glows from a window, suggesting human presence within the stillness of the night. The foreground features a cultivated field, rendered with rhythmic, horizontal lines that guide the eye across the bottom of the print. The colour palette relies on variations of indigo, Prussian blue, and muted earth tones, creating a sense of atmospheric depth and nocturnal calm. Hasui Kawase worked closely with the publisher Watanabe Shozaburo to produce these prints, which combined traditional Japanese woodblock techniques with Western concepts of light and perspective. His work often focused on the changing seasons and the quiet beauty of the Japanese countryside. This print demonstrates his ability to translate the fleeting qualities of moonlight and shadow into the medium of woodblock printing. The precision of the carving and the layering of the ink allow for a smooth transition between the dark sky and the illuminated clouds. The work remains a clear example of the technical skill involved in the Shin-hanga process, where the collaboration between artist, carver, and printer was essential to achieving the final result.
