Description
A refined woodblock print by Chōbunsai Eishi depicting a group of geisha preparing for a musical performance in the Edo period.
This woodblock print by Chōbunsai Eishi captures a scene of preparation within the pleasure quarters of Edo-period Japan. Eishi, a former samurai who transitioned to the art of ukiyo-e, is recognised for his refined depictions of women, often characterised by elongated figures and a sense of aristocratic grace. In this triptych, the composition is divided into distinct zones of activity, yet unified by the shared purpose of the subjects.
The figures are dressed in elaborate kimono, their postures relaxed as they attend to the final details before a performance. One woman adjusts a candle, another tunes a shamisen, while others observe or assist. The background features a folding screen decorated with a subtle plum blossom motif, providing a sense of interior space without overwhelming the viewer. The colour palette remains relatively muted, relying on soft ochre tones for the background and carefully balanced pigments for the garments.
Eishi moved away from the more exaggerated features found in the works of his contemporaries, opting instead for a more naturalistic, slender aesthetic. This print demonstrates his ability to balance the decorative requirements of the genre with a quiet, observational quality. The inclusion of lanterns hanging from the upper frame suggests an evening setting, adding to the atmosphere of anticipation. As a master of the bijin-ga style, Eishi provides a glimpse into the social rituals of the time, documenting the fashion and customs of the geisha community with precision. The print serves as a record of the aesthetic values prevalent in the late eighteenth century, where the focus on elegance and poise defined the artistic output of the period.
