Eishi, a former painter in the service of the Tokugawa shogunate, transitioned to the ukiyo-e genre in the late eighteenth century. The composition reinterprets the classic Tale of Genji, a foundational work of Japanese literature, by placing the narrative within a contemporary Edo-period setting.
