The irony is immediate: while the speaker raises his glass for a forty-third toast, the physical state of his companions reveals the reality of their gathering. One man lies prone on the floor, incapacitated by drink, while others appear dishevelled and unsteady.

Daumier employs his characteristic expressive line work to capture the absurdity of the situation. His figures are rendered with a sense of movement and volume, using shadow and contour to define their disarray. The composition focuses on the central orator, whose earnest expression contrasts sharply with the chaos unfolding beneath him.
