Description
A fine art print of the iconic Athenaeum portrait of George Washington, painted by Gilbert Stuart in 1796.
This portrait of George Washington, known as the Athenaeum portrait, is the most recognisable image of the first American president. Painted by Gilbert Stuart in 1796, the work captures Washington in his later years. Stuart focuses on the subject's face, employing a soft, diffused light that minimises harsh shadows while maintaining a sense of gravitas. The background remains dark and indistinct, which directs the viewer's attention to the sitter's expression and features.
Stuart utilised a technique involving thin glazes of colour to achieve the skin tones, a method he refined during his time in London. The white cravat and black coat provide a stark contrast to the flesh tones, creating a balanced composition. Unlike many formal portraits of the era, this work avoids elaborate props or settings. It presents Washington as a figure of authority, yet with a human quality that distinguishes it from more rigid, ceremonial depictions of the period.
The painting remained unfinished at the time of Washington's death, as Stuart kept the original to produce numerous copies for private clients. This specific version is held by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C., as a joint acquisition. It has become the primary source for the image of Washington found on the American one-dollar bill. The portrait demonstrates Stuart's ability to convey character through subtle brushwork and careful observation of light. It remains a primary example of American portraiture from the late eighteenth century, reflecting the aesthetic preferences of the early republic.
