Gezicht in het Colosseum - Jean Grandjean

A detailed eighteenth-century architectural study of the Colosseum in Rome, rendered in pen and grey wash by Dutch artist Jean Grandjean.

This drawing by Jean Grandjean captures the interior of the Colosseum in Rome during the late eighteenth century. Grandjean, a Dutch artist who travelled to Italy to study classical antiquity, produced this work in 1780. The composition focuses on the structural decay of the ancient amphitheatre, using a monochromatic palette of brown ink and grey wash to define the heavy stone arches and crumbling masonry.

The artist employs a precise pen technique to outline the architectural forms, while the wash provides depth and shadow within the vaulted corridors.
