Description

A detailed historical etching by Jan Goeree documenting the architectural evolution of the Haringpakkerstoren and Haarlemmerpoort in Amsterdam.

This etching by Jan Goeree provides a dual perspective of Amsterdam's architectural history. The composition is divided into two distinct registers, each documenting specific fortifications that defined the city's perimeter during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The upper panel depicts the Kruystoren, later known as the Haringpakkerstoren, alongside the old Haarlemmerpoort. The lower panel shows the Haarlemmerpoort as it appeared in the artist's own time, reflecting the urban development of the period.

Goeree employs a precise, linear technique characteristic of Dutch topographical illustration. The work functions as a visual record of civic infrastructure, capturing the defensive walls, water gates, and the surrounding canal environment. Small figures in boats populate the foreground, providing a sense of scale against the imposing masonry of the towers. The sky is rendered with delicate cross-hatching to suggest cloud formations, a common stylistic choice in prints intended for historical documentation or travel albums.

As a draughtsman and engraver, Goeree was active in documenting the changing face of Amsterdam. His work is valued for its clarity and attention to architectural detail. The inclusion of text beneath each scene identifies the structures, confirming the print's purpose as an informative guide to the city's topography. The print demonstrates the technical proficiency of Dutch printmakers who balanced artistic composition with the requirement for accurate representation. This piece offers a glimpse into the maritime and defensive character of Amsterdam before the extensive urban expansions of the later centuries.
