This etching by Hieronymus Cock, dated 1550, depicts the ruins of the Baths of Diocletian in Rome. Cock, a Flemish printmaker and publisher based in Antwerp, travelled to Italy during the 1540s. His observations of Roman antiquities provided the source material for his influential series of prints, which introduced Northern European audiences to the scale and grandeur of classical architecture.

The composition employs a low viewpoint, which emphasises the monumental nature of the remaining brickwork and vaulted arches. Vegetation clings to the crumbling masonry, suggesting the passage of time and the reclamation of the site by nature. In the foreground, small figures animate the scene, providing a sense of scale against the vast, decaying structures. The sky is filled with swirling, cloud-like formations, rendered with precise, rhythmic lines that contrast with the solid, heavy forms of the ruins.

Cock was instrumental in the dissemination of architectural knowledge during the sixteenth century.
