Description
A detailed nineteenth-century lithograph depicting the agricultural terrain and coastal views near Semarang, Java.
This lithograph, titled Gezicht op een landschap bij Samarang, captures a view of the terrain surrounding Semarang in Java, Indonesia. Produced by the Dutch lithographer Carl Wilhelm Mieling, the work reflects the nineteenth-century European interest in documenting the geography and colonial territories of the East Indies. The composition employs a traditional tiered approach to depth, beginning with a foreground slope where local figures tend to livestock. This immediate area provides a vantage point for the viewer to observe the agricultural patterns of the valley below.
The middle ground is dominated by a grid of rice paddies, which contrast with the rolling, sun-drenched hills. These hills are punctuated by clusters of trees and palms, typical of the Javanese topography. In the distance, the horizon opens to reveal a coastal plain and the sea, suggesting the proximity of the port city. The sky occupies a significant portion of the upper frame, rendered with soft, atmospheric washes that suggest a humid, tropical climate. Mieling, who operated a printing house in The Hague, was known for his technical precision in reproducing topographical drawings for publication.
The print serves as a visual record of the colonial era, documenting both the natural environment and the agricultural practices of the region. The use of lithography allows for subtle gradations in tone, particularly in the rendering of the distant hills and the expansive sky. The figures in the foreground provide a sense of scale, grounding the viewer in the specificities of the location. This work is representative of the period's output, where detailed prints were circulated to inform European audiences about the appearance and character of distant lands. The careful attention to the textures of the vegetation and the structure of the paddies demonstrates the analytical approach common to topographical illustration during this time.
