This etching by the Flemish artist and publisher Hieronymus Cock depicts the ruins of the Roman Palatine Hill. Produced around 1550, the work belongs to a series of prints documenting the ancient structures of Rome. Cock, who operated the influential publishing house Aux Quatre Vents in Antwerp, travelled to Italy during the 1540s. His observations of classical architecture provided the basis for these detailed topographical studies.

The composition focuses on the weathered masonry of the Palatine structures, rendered with precise, rhythmic line work. The artist employs a combination of hatching and cross-hatching to define the texture of the crumbling stone and the overgrown vegetation clinging to the arches. In the foreground, the uneven terrain is suggested through varied line weights, while the background features the distant silhouette of the Colosseum. The Latin inscription, 'RVINARVM PALATII MAIORIS, PROSPECTVS', identifies the subject as a view of the ruins of the great palace.

Unlike the idealised reconstructions common in the period, this print offers a more direct, observational approach to the physical state of the ruins. The architectural elements are presented with a sense of scale that emphasises the decay of the site. The work reflects the sixteenth-century fascination with classical antiquity, serving as a visual record for northern European audiences who had not visited the Italian peninsula. The clarity of the etching technique allows for the depiction of complex structural details, such as the vaulted ceilings and the layered brickwork of the Roman walls.
