Description

A detailed eighteenth-century etching by Leonard Schenk showing the Pesthuis and Sint-Elisabethgasthuis in Alkmaar.

This etching and engraving by Leonard Schenk depicts the Pesthuis and the Sint-Elisabethgasthuis in the Dutch city of Alkmaar. Schenk, a prolific engraver active in Amsterdam during the eighteenth century, produced this work as part of a broader interest in documenting urban architecture and civic institutions. The composition presents a street-level view, capturing the distinct gabled architecture characteristic of Dutch urban design from the period.

The print focuses on the functional structures of the hospital and pest house, buildings that served essential roles in the social and medical infrastructure of the city. Figures in period attire populate the foreground, providing a sense of scale and daily activity within the urban environment. The artist employs precise line work to define the masonry, roof tiles, and window frames, reflecting the technical rigour common to Dutch topographical printmaking. The sky is rendered with subtle hatching, creating a sense of atmosphere that balances the architectural clarity of the buildings.

Schenk includes bilingual titling in Dutch and French at the base of the print, a common practice for works intended for both local distribution and the international print market. This specific view offers a clear record of the site as it appeared in the mid-eighteenth century, before subsequent urban modifications. The work functions as a historical document, preserving the appearance of these civic buildings through the medium of copperplate engraving. The clean lines and balanced perspective demonstrate the technical proficiency of the artist, who was well-regarded for his ability to translate architectural subjects into accessible printed form. This print is a representative example of the topographical tradition that flourished in the Netherlands, where the documentation of city life and public architecture remained a primary subject for printmakers throughout the century.
