This etching by Salomon Savery depicts the coastal settlement of Luanda as it appeared around 1641. The work represents the right half of a larger panoramic view, capturing the maritime activity and the topography of the shoreline. Savery, a Dutch engraver and publisher, produced this image to document the colonial presence in West Africa during the period of Dutch expansion.

The composition is divided between the expansive, textured surface of the water and the distant, elevated coastline. Two ships occupy the foreground, their rigging and hulls rendered with precise, thin lines characteristic of seventeenth-century etching techniques.
