This graphite drawing by Adrianus Johannes Bik depicts a view of Tondano, located in North Sulawesi (formerly Celebes), as observed during the early nineteenth century. Bik, a Dutch official and amateur artist, travelled extensively through the Dutch East Indies, documenting the topography, architecture, and cultural markers of the region. His sketches provide a direct record of colonial-era observations, capturing the specific structural details of local dwellings and the surrounding environment.

The composition focuses on the village architecture, featuring traditional houses with steep, gabled roofs. The inclusion of decorated bamboo poles, or 'penjor', suggests a ceremonial or festive context within the settlement.
