Description
A refined 1821 engraving by Raffaello Morghen depicting the Italian author Giovanni Boccaccio in his traditional laurel wreath and hood.
This engraving by Raffaello Morghen, dated 1821, depicts the Italian writer Giovanni Boccaccio. Morghen, a master of the burin, was celebrated for his technical precision and his ability to translate the tonal qualities of painting into the medium of copperplate engraving. The portrait follows the established iconography of the author, showing him in profile with his characteristic hood and laurel wreath, which signifies his literary status.
The composition is restrained and formal, typical of the Neoclassical period. Morghen employs a sophisticated system of cross-hatching and stippling to render the texture of the fabric and the soft modelling of the face. The light source is directed from the left, creating a gentle contrast that defines the subject's features and the volume of his garments. By focusing on the clarity of line and the balance of light, Morghen achieves a sense of calm dignity.
Boccaccio is shown holding a book, a direct reference to his role as a scholar and the author of the Decameron. The background is kept dark and neutral, ensuring that the viewer's attention remains on the figure. The inscription at the base indicates the print was published in Florence by Luigi Bardi, a common practice for Morghen's later works. This print is an example of the high level of craftsmanship found in nineteenth-century reproductive printmaking, where the engraver acted as both a technician and an interpreter of historical portraiture. The work remains a clear record of how the image of the medieval poet was curated and disseminated during the early nineteenth century.
