Description

A study by Max Slevogt capturing a young girl observing a lion at the zoo, rendered with the loose, expressive brushwork typical of German Impressionism.

Max Slevogt, a key figure in German Impressionism, produced this work during a period when he frequently visited the Berlin Zoological Garden. The painting captures a quiet, observational moment: a young girl stands before an enclosure, her back to the viewer, as she gazes at a lion resting behind iron bars. Slevogt employs a rapid, gestural brushwork that prioritises the immediate sensory experience of the scene over precise anatomical detail.

The composition is divided by the physical barrier of the railing, which creates a clear separation between the observer and the captive animal. The girl, dressed in a white blouse and a striking red skirt, provides a vertical anchor against the horizontal expanse of the cage wall. Slevogt uses a palette dominated by muted greys, earthy browns, and greens, which allows the red of the girl's skirt to draw the eye immediately. The light appears filtered through trees, casting soft shadows across the ground and the white stone structure of the enclosure.

This work reflects Slevogt's interest in the fleeting nature of urban life and the intersection of human curiosity with the natural world. His technique, characterised by visible, energetic strokes, conveys the atmosphere of a sunny day at the zoo. The artist avoids excessive detail, opting instead to suggest the texture of the lion's mane and the girl's hat through economical application of paint. By focusing on the interaction between the child and the animal, Slevogt presents a scene that is both mundane and curious. The painting remains a fine example of his ability to translate a casual observation into a composed, painterly study of light and form.

Artist Biography

Max Slevogt

Slevogt was one third of the "Triumvirate of German Impressionism", alongside Max Liebermann and Lovis Corinth. His Egyptian watercolours of 1914, painted during a trip to the Nile, represent the high point of German Impressionist colour: luminous, rapid, capturing heat and light with an urgency that the studio could never replicate.

He was born in Landshut, Bavaria, in 1868 and studied in Munich and Paris. He painted theatre scenes, plein-air landscapes, book illustrations, murals and opera stage sets. He died in 1932.
