Pavel Filonov, a central figure in the Russian avant-garde, developed a unique methodology he termed Analytical Art. This work, created in 1920, addresses the GOELRO plan, which was the first Soviet state plan for national economic recovery through electrification. Filonov rejects traditional perspective, opting instead for a dense, cellular structure that reflects his belief that every atom of a painting must contain its own life and energy. The composition is divided into distinct zones. On the left, a vertical panel displays a crowd of faces, rendered with sharp, linear precision. These figures appear compressed, suggesting a collective mass rather than individual portraits. The upper right quadrant features a large, singular portrait of Vladimir Lenin, which emerges from a background of chaotic, web-like lines. These lines represent the complex network of power grids and industrial infrastructure envisioned by the electrification project. The lower sections depict workers and schematic figures, reinforcing the theme of labour and industrial transformation. Filonov applied paint in small, meticulous strokes, building the image through a process akin to organic growth. The palette is largely monochromatic, relying on earth tones and ochre to maintain focus on the structural density of the work. By avoiding smooth transitions, Filonov forces the viewer to engage with the painting as a collection of individual units that coalesce into a larger, ideological whole. This piece captures the tension between the individual and the state, as well as the ambition of early Soviet industrialisation. It remains a significant example of how Filonov applied his rigorous, scientific approach to art to the political subject matter of his time.
