Robert Julian Onderdonk, often recognised as the father of Texas painting, focused his practice on the unique light and terrain of the American Southwest. In this work, he captures the transition of the day as the sun descends, casting a warm, golden glow across the horizon. The composition relies on a contrast between the luminous, atmospheric sky and the darkened, silhouetted forms of the scrub oak and rugged terrain in the foreground.

Onderdonk studied under William Merritt Chase in New York before returning to Texas. His training is evident in the brushwork, which balances precise observation with a soft, painterly quality. The palette is restrained, favouring ochres, deep browns, and muted yellows to convey the dry, expansive nature of the Texas plains. Unlike the high-key colour palettes of some European Impressionists, Onderdonk utilised a more subdued approach, aligning his work with the Tonalist tradition. This style prioritises mood and atmosphere, using light to unify the various elements of the scene into a cohesive whole.

The painting avoids unnecessary detail, instead focusing on the interplay of shadow and illumination. The tree, positioned to the right, acts as a framing device that draws the eye toward the distant, hazy horizon.
