Description
A humorous scene from Hiroshige's Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido, depicting the persistent innkeepers of Goyu station attempting to secure business from weary travellers.
This woodblock print is part of the celebrated series, Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido, published by Hoeido. Utagawa Hiroshige captures a humorous and chaotic scene at the post station of Goyu. The composition focuses on the aggressive tactics employed by local innkeepers to secure business. Two women from a nearby establishment physically pull a weary traveller towards their inn, while another traveller attempts to resist their advances.
To the right, the interior of the inn is visible. A man sits on the floor, tending to his tired feet in a basin of water, while a woman watches from an upper window. The scene provides a glimpse into the daily realities of travel along the Tokaido road, which connected Edo to Kyoto. Hiroshige balances the narrative action with the architectural lines of the buildings, which recede into the distance to create a sense of space.
The print demonstrates the artist's ability to combine human observation with topographical detail. The colour palette remains restrained, relying on soft blues, earthy browns, and muted tones to define the figures and the street. The use of line is precise, characteristic of the Ukiyo-e tradition, where woodblock carving allowed for clean, expressive contours. This work remains a significant example of how Hiroshige moved beyond pure geography to document the social interactions of the Edo period. By focusing on the persistent solicitation of the inn staff, the artist adds a layer of wit to the travelogue, humanising the experience of the journey for the viewer.
