Description

A formal portrait engraving by Gérard Edelinck, depicting Grégoire de la Forge in his ecclesiastical robes, executed with precise seventeenth-century technique.

This engraving by Gérard Edelinck depicts Grégoire de la Forge, who served as the General of the Order of the Most Holy Trinity and of the Captives. Edelinck, a Flemish engraver who spent much of his career in Paris, was highly regarded for his technical precision and his ability to translate the nuances of painted portraits into the medium of copperplate engraving. His work often captured the formal dignity required for ecclesiastical and aristocratic subjects during the reign of Louis XIV.

The portrait is presented within a classic oval frame, a standard format for seventeenth-century portraiture. The subject is shown in clerical attire, including a mozzetta and a pectoral cross, which denotes his rank within the Trinitarian Order. Edelinck employs a sophisticated system of cross-hatching and varied line weights to render the texture of the fabric and the subtle modelling of the face. The lighting is directed to focus on the sitter, creating a sense of volume and presence. Below the oval, a cartouche containing the subject's coat of arms is integrated into the architectural base, which bears a Latin inscription identifying the sitter and his office. The composition is balanced and restrained, reflecting the formal conventions of the period.

Edelinck was known for his collaboration with contemporary painters, often engraving their works to disseminate them to a wider audience. This print demonstrates his mastery of the burin, showing clean, controlled lines that define the contours of the face and the folds of the vestments. The background within the oval is rendered with fine horizontal lines, providing a neutral field that prevents the subject from appearing detached from the space. This piece is a representative example of the high level of craftsmanship achieved by French printmakers in the late seventeenth century, where clarity and anatomical accuracy were prioritised.
