Jakob Steinhardt, a master of the woodcut medium, produced this work in 1950. The print displays his characteristic approach to form and line, where the physical act of carving into the wood block dictates the final aesthetic. Steinhardt, who was associated with the Berlin Secession and later became a central figure in the Bezalel Academy in Jerusalem, often explored themes of human suffering, mythology, and the uncanny.

In this composition, two distorted, winged figures occupy the upper portion of the frame. Their bodies are rendered with swirling, rhythmic lines that suggest movement and agitation. The figure on the left appears almost monstrous, with exaggerated features and a serpentine quality, while the figure on the right possesses a more human, albeit contorted, anatomy. The background is a dark, atmospheric void, achieved through deep gouges in the wood that create a sense of foreboding. Below these figures, a skeletal, root-like structure extends across the lower foreground, grounding the ethereal subjects in a harsh, earthly reality.

The colour palette is restrained, relying on a dark, ink-heavy ground contrasted with ochre, pale pink, and muted green highlights. This choice of colour emphasises the graphic nature of the print, allowing the texture of the wood grain to remain visible. Steinhardt’s technique involves a deliberate manipulation of light and shadow, where the white of the paper is used sparingly to define the contours of the figures against the darkness.
