This engraving by Dominicus Custos depicts Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Society of Jesus. Custos, a Flemish printmaker active in Augsburg, employed the precise burin techniques characteristic of late sixteenth-century Northern European printmaking. The portrait captures the subject in a three-quarter view, wearing the traditional clerical attire of the Jesuit order. His expression is one of focused contemplation, with his hands positioned as if in prayer, holding a rosary.

To the left of the figure, the Jesuit emblem, the IHS monogram surmounted by a cross and accompanied by a heart, is rendered with radiating lines. This symbol serves as a visual identifier for the order. The background remains relatively simple, allowing the viewer to focus on the facial features and the texture of the garments. The lower margin contains a Latin inscription identifying the subject and providing a scriptural reference from the Book of Daniel, which links the figure to themes of wisdom and righteousness.

Custos utilised a system of parallel hatching and cross-hatching to define the contours of the face and the folds of the heavy fabric. This method creates a sense of volume and depth within the two-dimensional medium.
