Hallucinations - Heinrich Hoerle

Heinrich Hoerle was a central figure in the Cologne Dada movement and later associated with the New Objectivity (Neue Sachlichkeit) style. This work, titled Hallucinations, displays the characteristic distortion and psychological tension found in his output during the late 1920s. The composition features a seated, armless figure with a contorted facial expression, positioned on a chair that appears to merge with the subject. To the left, a cluster of severed hands emerges from small containers, a motif that reflects the artist's preoccupation with the fragmentation of the human form following the trauma of the First World War.

Hoerle utilised a precise, clean line to render these unsettling subjects. The lack of background detail forces the viewer to focus on the anatomical anomalies and the stark, clinical nature of the scene. His work often examined the alienation of the individual within a modern, industrialised society. By stripping away realistic proportions, Hoerle communicated a sense of existential unease. The figure's posture, combined with the bizarre presence of the disembodied hands, creates a narrative of internal distress.
