Muller, a prominent figure in the Dutch Mannerist tradition, demonstrates his technical mastery through the precise use of the burin. The composition is contained within an oval frame, focusing on the figure's expressive, weathered face and the gesture of a finger pressed to the lips. This iconography draws from classical antiquity, where Harpocrates was often represented as a youth or a figure associated with the mysteries of silence.

The print features Latin inscriptions that reinforce the theme. The upper text, 'Digito compesce labellum. Loqui ignorabit, qui tacere nescit', translates to 'Restrain your lip with your finger. He who does not know how to be silent will not know how to speak.' The lower text identifies the subject as 'Harpocrates Philosophus, silentii Deus'. Muller employs a sophisticated system of hatching and cross-hatching to model the facial features, creating a sense of volume and texture that is characteristic of his mature style. The figure wears a soft, draped head covering, and the play of light across the skin suggests a deep understanding of anatomical form.

As a Dutch engraver active in Amsterdam, Muller was influenced by the works of Bartholomaeus Spranger and Hendrick Goltzius.
