The work reproduces a composition originally attributed to Albrecht Dürer, dated 1506, as noted in the inscription at the base of the print. Sadeler, a member of a prominent family of engravers, demonstrates his command of the burin through the precise rendering of the angel's features and the soft, undulating texture of the hair.
The subject is depicted in a three-quarter view, with the head tilted upwards. The gaze is directed away from the viewer, suggesting a contemplative or ethereal state. Sadeler employs a system of hatching and cross-hatching to model the volume of the face and the folds of the simple garment. The light source, coming from the upper left, creates a clear division between the illuminated side of the face and the shadowed areas, which adds a sense of physical presence to the figure.
The inscription at the bottom provides historical context, identifying the original creator and the engraver. It reads: ALBERTVS DVRER ALMANVS FECIT ANNO M D VI (Albrecht Dürer the German made this in the year 1506) and EGIDIVS SADELER SCALPSIT ANNO M D XCVIII (Aegidius Sadeler engraved this in the year 1598). This practice of reproducing earlier works was common among printmakers of the period, allowing them to demonstrate their technical skill while paying homage to established masters. The print remains a clear example of the high level of craftsmanship associated with the Sadeler workshop, which was active in Prague under the patronage of Emperor Rudolf II.
