Hercules and the Hydra of Lerna - Antonio Tempesta

A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Antonio Tempesta depicting the classical struggle between Hercules and the multi-headed Hydra.

Antonio Tempesta, a Florentine painter and printmaker, produced this etching depicting the second labour of Hercules. The composition captures the hero in the act of confronting the multi-headed serpent, the Hydra, within the marshes of Lerna. Hercules is shown from behind, his muscular form draped in the Nemean lion skin, while he wields his characteristic club. The Hydra occupies the left side of the frame, its serpentine necks twisting in a chaotic display of aggression. Smoke and flames billow in the background, suggesting the cauterisation of the stumps that Tempesta includes as part of the narrative sequence.

Tempesta was known for his prolific output of etchings, which often focused on classical mythology, hunting scenes, and biblical narratives. His technique relies on dense cross-hatching to define the musculature of the figures and the texture of the beast. The lines are precise, creating a sense of movement and tension typical of the late Mannerist and early Baroque transition. The artist avoids excessive ornamentation, focusing instead on the dynamic interaction between the two figures. The background is rendered with rapid, energetic strokes that convey the atmosphere of the swampy environment.
