This etching by Antonio Tempesta depicts the first of the twelve labours of Hercules. The composition captures the hero in a physical struggle with the Nemean lion, a beast known for its impenetrable hide. Tempesta, a Florentine artist, was prolific in his production of prints, often focusing on mythological and biblical narratives. His work is characterised by a clear, linear approach to form, which allowed his prints to be widely circulated and studied across Europe during the seventeenth century.

The scene is constructed with a focus on the anatomy of the figures. Hercules is shown in a dynamic posture, his muscles tensed as he grapples with the creature. In the background, a secondary figure is visible, perhaps suggesting a narrative sequence or a variation on the theme within the same frame. The inclusion of the club, lying on the ground in the foreground, provides a sense of scale and context to the myth.
