In the centre, Hercules sits in contemplation, his posture suggesting the weight of a difficult decision. He is flanked by two female figures representing opposing paths. One figure, dressed in armour and holding a palm branch, represents the path of peace, while the other, holding a sword, embodies the necessity of conflict. The composition relies on the traditional iconographic trope of the choice between virtue and vice, adapted here to comment on the neutrality and political pressures faced by the Netherlands during the conflict.

Braakensiek was a prolific illustrator known for his sharp political commentary and technical precision.
