Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita was a Dutch graphic artist known for his mastery of the woodcut medium. His work often focused on animal subjects, rendered with a distinct economy of line and form. This print, titled Hert, demonstrates his ability to reduce a complex organic subject into a series of bold, graphic shapes. By utilising the stark contrast between the white silhouette of the resting deer and the deep black background, the artist creates a composition that is both immediate and quiet.
